Honey has been used in skincare for centuries. Cleopatra was famous for bathing in honey and milk to keep her skin soft. Poppea, wife of Roman Emperor Nero, used a lotion with milk and honey on her face to keep skin looking young and Madame du Barry, mistress of Louis XV of France, used honey masks. Nowadays, honey is the main ingredient in a lot of skincare products because of its many benefits.
Because it is rich and thick, honey is a great moisturizer. It is an humectant and has therefore the ability to attract and retain moisture to the skin. It keeps skin hydrated and supple and smooths dry, rough and wrinkled skin.
Honey contains antioxidants, which protect skin from UV rays and free radicals, the main causes of premature aging.
It also has anti-irritant and anti-bacterial properties. It kills bacteria and prevents them from growing and helps heal cuts and wounds. It is a good treatment for acne and won’t dry the skin.
