Bad breath is usually caused by breakdown of proteins by bacteria in mouth. Chronic bad breath is called halitosis and it can be provoked by lots of factors such as stress, hunger, smoking. Some types of bad breath, for example “morning mouth”, or the bad breath after eating certain kinds of food like garlic, or onion, are considered to be normal, not being health concerns.

But, bad breath also can warn us about a serious health problem such as diabetes, gum disease, respiratory tract infections (lung infection, sinus or throat infection) or tooth decay. It may be the reason of an infection in mouth as well.

Bad breath is not contagious, meaning that we cannot take it from someone else. Usually, it appears when our mouth becomes dry and dead cells adhere to our tongue and cheeks. The bacteria use these cells as food, expelling substance that has a nasty odor.

What provokes bad breath

Bad breath is an ordinary problem which is caused by the activity of the bacteria in mouth, particularly on tongue. There are many various things that can cause this condition – starting with not brushing our teeth to certain health conditions. Cigarettes, coffee and almost all other kinds of food and drinks make our mouth smell less pleasant.

How to get rid of bad breath

As the tongue is the main place where the bacteria multiply, it is essential to brush it in the morning and after meals, together with teeth. The number of bacteria increases in an acid environment, that is why you can use baking soda dissolved in warm water to reduce the acidity in your mouth.

Use natural fresheners like seeds of cardamom or anise, thyme, clove, fennel, parsley, coriander, basil, rosemary. Chew any of these herbs to cause salivation in your mouth.

For better breath smell chew carnation or peppermint. Remember that chewing gum can help you only mask your bad breath, but it does not heal it.

Here is a home remedy for bad breath using coffee: Prepare you morning coffee from freshly ground coffee beans and a few cardamom seeds. Do not add milk and do not drink it if you feel hangover.

Another good remedy for bad breath is tea from cloves. Grind some cloves, then add a part of them into hot water, steep for 20 minutes. Then strain the mixture and use it as gargle or mouthwash twice per day.

A tongue scraper will help you get rid of bacteria, dead cells and food particles that cause the unpleasant smell. This kind of plastic thing can be bought at drug stores and sometimes at healthy food stores and it is not too expensive. The usage of the tongue scraper must become a usual practice. However, if you do not want to spend your money on such an instrument, then use your toothbrush to clean your tongue.

Before going to bed, wash your mouth with a glass of water mixed with the juice of a half of lemon.
